Electric Service Requests -
Upgrades/Relocations
Service Upgrades
Most electric service upgrades are requested by homeowners who require additional electrical capacity to satisfy increased electrical needs for their homes. Upgrading electric service can involve simply replacing the existing panel board with a higher-rated one, such as going from a 60 amp service to a 100 amp service. Upgrading from 60 amps to 200 amps or 100 amps to 200 amps, however, generally involves replacing the existing overhead or underground service conductors at the customer’s expense. Occasionally, a larger residence may require an upgrade to a 400amp panel. Service upgrades generally involve replacing the existing overhead aerial cable with a higher capacity cable or replacing an existing underground cable with a larger cable that carries more current. In some instances, the existing cabling may be adequate without the need to replace it as determined by our Operating Division. Overhead service upgrades generally require the resident to replace the older, porcelain house attachment with a galvanized steel strap or pull-off plate to ensure that the service will not pull out of the house. Appropriate NEC codes and typical attachments are shown on the drawings provided by the Electric Office for homeowners use. The customer will generally be charged for any work the City needs to do, except for 60amp to 100amp overhead upgrades, which in many cases do not require the replacement of the existing conductors.
In the case of existing underground service, if the City determines that the service needs to be replaced with a higher capacity cable, the resident is responsible for digging and backfilling a new trench for installation of the new cable. The City will then charge the customer for installing the new cable in the trench and making the terminations and connections at each end of the cable.
Please use the forms located to the top right of this page to apply for a service upgrade or check the diagrams and specifications for residential overhead, residential underground and commercial service. The diagrams also indicate the required trench depth and applicable NEC codes.
Relocation
Existing electric service (overhead or underground) may, on occasion, need to be relocated due to remodeling or building additions in order to avoid conflicts with the existing cabling or to avoid code violations. Other times, a homeowner may want to change existing overhead service to underground, which may result in relocating the new underground meter pedestal.
When relocating overhead service, if the length of service cable needs to be increased, the customer will be charged for any work required to either splice in additional cable or replace the existing cable with a longer span of conductor. When required to relocate an existing buried electric cable, the resident is responsible for digging and backfilling the trench based on our standard trench depth. The City Electric utility will install the appropriate cable in the trench and make the terminations. The customer will be charged for the City’s expense in labor and material for the cable installation.
For overhead services, the aerial cable must terminate either on an acceptable riser installation or a standard (12” x 1 ¼”) galvanized steel pull-off bracket. Standard drawings are available that explain the proper codes to be followed and illustrate typical, acceptable installations.
