What is CodeRed?

From Amber Alerts to evacuation orders, our most valuable resource in times of emergency is often information. The faster residents and communities are alerted to a situation that is taking place, the more able they are to respond and do what is necessary to protect themselves and their neighbors.

That is why Kane County implementede a countywide telephone notification system to alert residents of a disaster or emergency in a timely manner. Named CodeRed, the system is capable of placing up to 60,000 phone calls per hour to inform residents of what is taking place and provide important instruction on what to do next. As it stands, the CodeRed database includes every listed landline telephone number in the County – but not cellular phone numbers, unlisted lines, or Voice over Internet Protocol listings. Given the widespread use of cellular phones in particular, this database must be expanded to make CodeRed truly effective.

That is why residents are being asked to take a minute to submit alternative numbers where you can be reached in case of an emergency.

Visit the Kane County website at www.countyofkane.org. Simply click on the CodeRed logo on the homepage and enter your information

Conserving Energy In Your Older Building

Presented by the St. Charles Historic Preservation Commission

Historic dwellings have a number of inherent energy conservation qualities such as tall ceilings and door transoms, thick brick or plastered wood walls and large attic spaces. Traditional approaches to heating and cooling in historic buildings can be adapted to modern considerations of comfort and energy efficiency.

Air infiltration through small cracks in a building’s exterior is a major source of heat loss or gain. Making efforts to minimize this by properly caulking, and weather-stripping the building as well as window and door openings is one of the smallest and best investments you can make. Did you know 22% of a dwelling’s energy loss is through the windows? Use interior or exterior storm windows and doors to significantly cut down that loss.

Did you know 28% of a dwellings energy loss is through the roof?

Make sure your attic has a minimal insulation R-Value of R-19 for gas and oil heat & R-22 for dwellings with electric heat.

Thermal insulation should also be installed in unheated cellars and crawlspaces.

Other traditional energy savings measures available for the old house owner are window and porch awnings, exterior window shutters and interior drapes and blinds.
