City of St. Charles Launches Study of the State Street Creek Watershed

Input Requested from Affected Residents

The City of St. Charles is developing a comprehensive Storm water and Watershed plan for the State Street Creek area. Field work for the plan begins Sept. 26. If you are a property owner in the State Street Creek area, the City wants to hear from you.

State Street Creek Storm Water Plan

The goal of the storm water master plan is to identify any flooding problem areas within the watershed and develop possible solutions to address the flooding. Over the next few weeks, the City’s consultants, HR Green, Inc. and Applied Ecological Services, will be conducting field inspections and surveying the storm sewer system and the State Street Creek within the watershed.

EPA Watershed Plan

A watershed plan is different from a storm water master plan in that a storm water master plan addresses flooding problems, while a watershed plan addresses the quality of storm water runoff that flows into the creek. The watershed plan assesses the overall condition of the watershed and provides a framework to restore the quality of the storm water within the creek. Pollutants found in storm water runoff typically are sediments resulting from bank erosion and nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous that wash off into the creek.

Property Owner Questionnaire

The City is asking stakeholders who live or own property in the State Street Creek Watershed Area or were impacted by previous flooding in this area to provide input by filling out an online questionnaire here www.stcharlesil.gov/state-street-creek-watershed-questionnaire.

“This is an important study for our community,” said Karen Young, Assistant Director of Public Works. “By taking a few minutes to fill out the survey on our website you will be providing our project team valuable information for the study. We want to hear from you.”

Project Website

Visit the State Street Creek project page on the City website at www.stcharlesil.gov/projects.  There, property owners can learn more about the project and fill out a survey questionnaire that will tell us about your flooding issues to help us better understand and address any problems.

A public meeting for this project anticipated December 2016, with completion of the study expected by June 2017. Please visit the project page for additional updates throughout the process.

Support for this project has been provided by the Kane County Board, through its Office of Community Reinvestment, with funds from the Grand Victoria Riverboat Casino. For more information, contact the Public Works Department at 630-584-5353 or email stormwater@stcharles.gov.
