City of St. Charles Receives Geographic Information Systems Award

St. Charles Chosen from More Than 300,000 Candidates

The City of St. Charles Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Division received a Special Achievement in GIS award from Esri, Inc., a leader in spatial analytics. The award recognizes the City’s innovative application of technology, data collection, geospatial information visualization, and thought leadership through GIS in the field of local government. The City was selected from more than 300,000 eligible candidates, and puts our GIS Division in the top 1/10 of 1% of users of Esri software.

The GIS team was recognized for two projects:

City of St. Charles Once Again Earns NOAA/NWS StormReady Designation

City has been certified a StormReady Community Since 2014

An Advisory Board of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration & National Weather Service recently re-certified St. Charles as a StormReady Community. The designation is granted every three years to communities that have met or exceeded requirements for severe weather preparation. The City of St. Charles has been a certified StormReady Community since 2014. 

City of St. Charles Recognized for Support of Military Employees with Two Awards

Police and Fire Departments Presented with ESGR Awards, Recognizing Support of Active Duty National Guardsmen

The City of St. Charles firmly believes in supporting military service and celebrating our military service members—both past and present.

30 of our employees, or about 10% of our work force, are either veterans or active duty service members. We’re very proud of that. They work in several departments throughout our organization: Information Systems, Public Works, Building Code & Enforcement, Police and Fire.

Officer John Losurdo Honored for Outstanding Police Work

St. Charles Police Officer John Losurdo was presented the 2016 Louis Spuhler Award for outstanding police work at the 40th Annual Kane County Chiefs of Police Association Dinner March 9 at Pheasant Run Resort.

The award, presented by the Association in partnership with Batavia Moose Lodge #682, recognizes the top police officer in Kane County for going above and beyond in their police duties. The Chiefs of Police Association received 14 nominations for the 2016 award.

Red Gate Water Tower Wins Award

The 1.5-million gallon Red Gate Water Tower at IL 25 and Red Gate Road that was completed October 2016 has been named “Elevated Tank of the Year” by the Steel Plate Institute/Steel Plate Fabricator Association. With help from their consulting engineer, the City selected all-welded steel construction over other materials for its winter weather durability and enhanced aesthetics. The tank design, with nearly 1.5” thick steel, had to support the 12,495,000 pounds of water when full.

New 1st Street Parking Deck Named after Former Mayor of St. Charles Sue Klinkhamer

At the Dec. 19, 2016 City Council meeting, the new parking deck on 1st Street, informally referred to as First Street Parking Garage-East, was officially named the Susan L. Klinkhamer Parking Deck, in honor of the former Mayor of St. Charles.

Klinkhamer served as Ward 1 Alderman from 1989-1997, and then was elected as the first female Mayor of St. Charles. Klinkhamer served as Mayor from 1997-2005. Planning for the First Street development got underway in 2002.

Fire Department’s Lt. Tony Cavallo Earns Statewide Recognition

Lieutenant Tony Cavallo in the St. Charles Fire Department recently was named a finalist in the 2016 American Legion Firefighter of the Year Award. Lt. Cavallo was honored at the Sept. 6, 2016, City Council Meeting.

Lt. Cavallo had to meet stringent eligibility guidelines and professional criteria to be considered for the award, which includes nominees from fire departments throughout Illinois.

City Receives Community Service Award

The St. Charles Park District, in conjunction with the Illinois Association of Park Districts and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association, recognizes local organizations and businesses for their outstanding contributions to the advancement of parks and recreation with the 2016 Community Service Awards.

The St. Charles Park District presented the City with a Community Service Award, for longtime sponsorship of the July 4th Celebration and the Sculpture in the Park exhibit.
